Camping Area Conserved on Cape Cod

One of the last items the late Senator Kennedy worked on was protection of the North of Highland Camping Area. Located in Truro, this is an area of Cape Cod that still retains the charm of yesteryear, with its wild dunes, stretch of sublime coastline, and patches of forest. Unlike much of the Cape these days, Truro has resisted overbuilding. In 2005, North of Highland’s owner expressed interested in retiring and selling the 57-acre property, which the family had owned for over 50 years. The Trust for Public Land stepped in to prevent its sale for residential development and just announced they secured a conservation easement that will be managed by the National Park service. This makes perfect sense since the property lies inside the Cape Cod National Seashore, a half-mile walk from Head of the Meadow Beach.

Whitewater Raft on the Concord River, Less Than a 30-Minute Drive from Boston

Every weekend now through May 22nd, you can go on a 3-hour guided whitewater rafting trip on the Concord River, just north of Boston. R&R in the Adirondacks

Even during my honeymoon 20 years ago, I was writing notes, researching for travel stories. Since the tape in my trusty microcassette recorder melted during an assignment backpacking through the Mojave Desert over a decade ago, I’ve always carried notebooks around during my travels. But there’s one trip each year that I don’t bring any notebooks or pens and can truly relax on vacation. That’s my annual jaunt to Bolton Landing on Lake George to see my family over Labor Day Weekend. We each grab a room at the Bonnie View, with exceptional views of the mountains on the opposite shores. Then I head down to the Adirondack chairs on the dock and chill with a copy of my boyhood paper, the Schenectady Gazette, in hand. I’ve written numerous stories on the Adirondacks, but not lately, resulting in much needed down time.

Spotting Bald Eagles in Red Wing, Minnesota

An hour’s drive south of Minneapolis on the Mississippi River, Red Wing, Minnesota is best known for its restored century-old Sheldon Theatre and the 1875 St. James Hotel.  National Geographic Traveler magazine recently named it the 23rd most historic destination in the world. Come winter, folks come to Red Wing to spot a bald eagle. Hundreds of eagles gather along the riverfront to search for fish and other small prey. Each weekend from February 19th through March 13th, naturalists will be on hand at Red Wing’s Covill Park to provide scopes and binoculars and answer questions about eagle behavior and the recovery of America’s most famous bird.

Ko Olina Resort Week—Family-Friendly Rooms

At the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort, my family of four had two adjoining rooms, one with a king-sized bed, and the second room with two queen beds for the kids. Both rooms also had the signature JW Marriott dual vanities to give mom and dad some space. The oversized balconies at both rooms offered expansive views of the ocean and at night, we would leave the screen doors open to hear the waves rolling ashore. 
 
Even on crowded July 4th week, checking into the Disney Aulani, located next door to Ihilani, was a breeze. Someone takes the car and luggage, another person welcomes you with leis and cool water and then escorts you to the front desk, where at least a dozen people were checking in guests. Once we stepped foot into our room, luggage arrived within 5 minutes. We shared a room at Aulani, two queen beds with ocean view. The room was a standard double room and the beds were comfortable. Honestly, I didn’t spend much time in either of the two rooms, excited to go swimming in the lazy river, infinity pool, or hit the beach to paddleboard or kayak in the lagoon. When Hawaii beckons at your front door step, the room is used merely to shower and sleep.
