Ecuador, So Much More Than the Galapagos! A Stop at Cotopaxi
Guest Post and Photos by Amy Perry Basseches
- Inside the Park, near the Tambopaxi Lodge, we got our horses and rode for a few hours across grassy and rocky terrain, with our guide. Unforgettable!
- Also inside the Park, we walked around the Laguna Limpiopungo, watching a herd of wild horses, and newborn colt, graze nearby.
- Stargazing in Ecuador is purported to be amazing — not only are you away from light pollution in many of these natural areas, but you are at a high altitude, and, the closer you are to the equator, you can see both Northern and Southern Hemisphere constellations, perfect for the growing field of Astrotourism. It was too cloudy for us.
- Unfortunately, we did not get to trek to the base camp on Cotopaxi, an outlook at an elevation of 4,864 metres (almost 16,000 feet). Our guide had worked for 7 years at the base camp, the José F. Ribas Refuge, which is a 40 to 80 minute uphill hike from the car park. Here, climbers can spend the night and begin their summit bid. Mountain biking is also available from the Refuge.

Still Possible to Visit Cuba
While cruise ships can no longer visit Cuba and the People to People Educational travel category is being eliminated, we still have clients traveling to Cuba over the next year. Our friend Megumi, who runs the tour operator HabanaLive in Cuba, tells us that clients can either join a People to People trip that has been grandfathered in (they have grandfathered FIT bookings available on multiple dates throughout fall/winter/spring) or travel under a different approved travel category. They have fantastic programing options under the Support for the Cuban People, Professional Research & Meetings, and Religious travel categories. So if you want to visit Cuba, ActiveTravels will get you there!
Find Peak Colors on the Drive from Asheville to Great Smoky Mountains National Park
The 80-mile stretch of roadway between Asheville and Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a joy anytime of year, but it’s hard to top this coming week when the leaves on red maples, dogwoods, and sassafras trees are at the height of their fall foliage. Spend your first night in the heart of downtown at the Renaissance Asheville. Then it’s time to hit the High Country, where the drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway reaches its highest elevation at 6,047 feet, surrounded by row after row of ridges like the flanks of Mount Pisgah and Cold Mountain, the setting for the best-selling novel. There are numerous opportunities to stretch your legs and stroll to lonely mountain streams and waterfalls amongst the 120 species of trees, the greatest variety in the US. A good place to start is the self-guided Harwood Cove Nature Trail that begins at the Chimneys Picnic Area.
Visit the Newly Refurbished Mayflower Inn
Listen to the church bells ring from the nearby green and you might feel that the village of Washington, Connecticut, has changed little since the time of its namesake, George Washington. Well, that is, until you enter the foremost accommodation in the region, The Mayflower Inn, and see the fantastic new redesign. The exquisite country retreat set on 58 private acres and now part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, recently debuted a striking new interior thanks to New York-based designer Celerie Kemble. The entirety of the Inn’s century-old main house has a vibrant new color palette, including pastel pinks and greens to flowery drapery. Also of note, acclaimed chef April Bloomfield joins the property as chef-in-residence this fall. The James Beard award-winning chef will oversee all dining outlets at the Inn through the end of 2020, including the hotel’s new restaurant, The Garden Room, featuring a four-course tasting menu offered Thursday through Saturday evenings. Before dinner, stroll the grounds, dotted with stone walls and a running stream, and you’ll feel like lord of the manor.
