Cruise Lines Help with Evacuations and Aid to Puerto Rico

Nearly a week after Hurricane Maria slammed Puerto Rico, many residents are in critical need of supplies. Food, water, and medicine are dwindling and the island is expected to be without power for several months. The international airport in San Juan continues to operate on limited emergency power with fewer than ten commercial flights to the US each day. Instead, Puerto Rico is relying on cruise ships to bring resources to the devastated island. Royal Caribbean Cruises cancelled its Adventure of the Seas cruise to utilize the ship for evacuation and humanitarian efforts. The ship arrived in San Juan yesterday, before heading to St. Thomas and St. Croix to aid in the evacuation and donate critical supplies to each destination. Adventure of the Seas will bring evacuees to Fort Lauderdale before returning to San Juan on October 6. Carnival, the world’s largest cruise line, also has been helping with the aid effort. Carnival ships are currently traveling to destinations in the Caribbean that have been impacted by both Hurricane Irma and Maria.

Dining and Lodging in Las Cruces, New Mexico

For authentic Mexican fare at an affordable price, it’s hard to top the restaurants in Las Cruces. I loved the ambience and history of dining at La Posta de Mesilla while sipping a house margarita and soaking it all in. Tacos al pastor was the signature dish at nearby Andele, perfectly charred meat topped with homemade salsa from their salsa bar. The huevos rancheros were so good at the homey La Nueva Casita I went there twice. Other highlights include the overstuffed lava burger, washed down with a refreshing pecan ale at the Pecan Grill and Brewery; fish tacos at the spanking new Dragonfly on Main Street (perfectly located for the Saturday Farmers Market); a tasty Greek salad with grilled chicken at Tiffany’s; and the frozen custard hot fudge sundae, topped with local salted pecans, at Caliche’s. I stayed at the Hotel Encanto, an easy drive to all the restaurants and sights in Las Cruces. After a long day of sightseeing and writing, it was great to unwind at their long pool shaded by tall palms and overflowing with monarch butterflies. A little bit of paradise in the desert.

Ko Olina Resort Week—Family-Friendly Activities

Less than 30 minutes into a snorkeling cruise with Ocean Joy Cruises out of Ko Olina Marina, we were surrounded by a pod of spinner dolphins. They were gracefully swimming next to the boat, their fins gliding in and out of the water. At least five dolphins jumped dramatically out of the water and spun in the air. The best part about the experience is that we were the only boat out there, not the usual half-dozen boats chasing the same dolphins. Backed by the arid, jagged peaks that rise along the quiet western shores, the backdrop was magical. It only got better when we were dumped into the 78-degree ocean water atop a reef that was teeming with neon-colored fish. The visibility was excellent and as soon I made the plunge, I was mesmerized by the yellow eyes of the aptly named Picasso Triggerfish and the silky Black Triggerfish. 
 
Venturing out on a snorkeling cruise is merely one of the numerous activities offered at the Ko Olina Resort. Frankly, you never have to leave your property whether you’re staying at the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort, the Disney Aulani Resort, or the Marriott Vacation Club villas. There are four beachfront lagoons that lead to the shallow waters, ideally suited for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking or spotting fish. This is in addition to the numerous pools, lazy rivers, and hot tubs scattered across the properties, most with waiter service. And the Ko Olina Golf Club was recently chosen by Golf Digest as one of the top 75 resort courses in America.
 
Last night, the moon was glowing and stars glittered across the sky, the perfect opportunity to stargaze, an activity led by the knowledgeable astronomer, Greg, at Aulani. Through his high-powered telescopes, we lined up to view the ring around Saturn, see the craters of the brilliantly lit moon, spot disc-like Mars, a hazy distant galaxy, even a Black Hole. I’d say that’s a pretty good day when you can view a Picasso Triggerfish and the ring around Saturn.

Have Skype, Will Travel

This past month, I was home only three days, traveling to Kenya, Mexico, and Chicago. That’s a long time to be away from my family. My antidote for homesickness is a video call on Skype, where I can see and talk to my wife and children. The clarity of the call is exceptional, far superior to any international cell phone I’ve ever used. All you have to do is sign up at Skype, pay a nominal fee (it averages about 10 cents for a 10-minute call), and start adding all the significant people in your life as contacts. For travel writers and all other businesspeople who find themselves on the road a good chunk of the year, it’s the most essential tool to connect with your loved ones.

Paved a Lot, Put up Paradise

Last summer, I wrote a story for Outside Magazine on the transformation of abandoned oil plants, railroad yards, even elevated railroad lines (the High Line Park in Manhattan) into popular urban parks. Now The Trust for Public Land’s Peter Harnik has written a book on the subject called “Urban Green: Innovative Parks for Resurgent Cities.” A must read for any urban visionary, the book not only delves into examples, but is a primer on how to create parks from space that not long ago was thought of as unusable. Grab lunch at Chelsea Market and have a picnic on the High Line, like I recently did, and you realize the brilliance of this concept.
