The Trustees Welcomes Guests Back to Two Iconic Inns
The Trustees just announced the reopening of the two inns they run in Massachusetts on April 2nd. Inn at Castle Hill in Ipswich is a 10-room property located within the Crane Estate and next to Crane Beach. Talk a long walk on the beach by your lonesome in spring and then return to the property for a yummy breakfast. The Guest House at Field Farm is just outside Williamstown, perfect for an art lover’s retreat to the nearby Clark and Mass MoCA art museums. Wander outdoors around Field Farm’s sculpture garden and you’ll have excellent views of the slopes of Mt. Greylock. The six guest rooms are a treat for interior designers, created in the mid-century-modern style.
We stayed in the heart of the Gothic Quarter at the Hotel Neri, down a twisting alleyway from a recently excavated 4th-century synagogue. The bed was incredibly comfortable, especially after a long day of sightseeing, and Lisa especially enjoyed the outdoor tub. The highlight, however, was breakfast, where we would dine on our perfectly poached eggs and look out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the many families dropping off their young children at the school behind us. Kids would arrive hand-in-hand with grandparents, on the front of bikes with mom and dad, and holding onto dogs far larger than them. It was a wonderful voyeuristic look into the lives of families in Barcelona.
Strolling the narrow streets, we would stumble upon opera singers belting out “Ave Maria” from behind the historic cathedral, art students selling their impressive wares at art fairs, and a hole-in-the-wall bakery where the guy made the strongest and best café con leche on the trip. So good, in fact, that we went back three afternoons in a row. Our daughter, Melanie, who’s studying abroad in Barcelona, made reservations at her favorite restaurants in town, all within easy walking distance of Hotel Neri. They included the delectable tapas found at La Luna, and sublime sushi and sangria at Ikibana. Friends in Barcelona also suggested another winning choice, Elsa y Fred, though it’s hard to go astray in this foodie destination.
A major perk of being a Virtuoso travel agent is the fam trip. Fam is short for familiarization and these trips are usually low cost to travel advisors to appealing destinations around the globe. Nevertheless, once you arrive, you are fair game to any tourism professional or hotelier in the region. Each one wants to show you their property, activity and special corner of the universe. When I went to Queensland, Australia, in March of 2017, I expected countless hotel viewings and long-drawn out meetings with crocodile park owners.
Instead I was pleasantly surprised to experience one of my dream days of 2017. I woke up in Silky Oaks Lodge in Mossman Gorge, in the middle of the Daintree Rainforest, the oldest living rainforest on earth. After a breakfast overlooking the flowing river, we boarded helicopters to view the dense forest from above. The pilots surprised us by landing on rocks next to a waterfall so we could experience feeling completely surrounded by this wet tropical landscape. Whisked away moments later, we were brought back to the lodge for a luscious swim down a cool river.
The best part was yet to come! We boarded a van to go into Port Douglas the largest town in northern Queensland and home to many boutique shops, great restaurants and a harbor where Quicksilver Cruises is based. We boarded Wavedancer, a large catamaran that soon was cruising out to sea toward the setting sun. With drink in hand, I toasted with my new friends and watched a spectacular sunset. Back on land, we ate a delicious dinner involving Moreton Bay “Bugs,” which look and taste a lot like our Maine lobster. On the way home, we stopped on the side of the road, got out and took a moment to take in the magnificent Southern Hemisphere stars together. It was certainly a day I will always remember.
After visiting every nook and cranny of New England and New York state over my lifetime, I thought I’ve seen it all. But I was wrong! One day last February, we dropped the kids off to ski at Catamount in the Berkshires while we climbed Monument Mountain, the peak Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne made famous when they made the same climb in 1850. Then we headed south for an hour into the heart of Hudson Valley’s farmland. I had visited the towns just over the border in Litchfield Hills, Connecticut, like Kent, Sharon, and Salisbury, but had never ventured into the New York state side to see Millbrook, Millerton, and Armenia, home to the 250-acre estate hotel called Troutbeck. We would spend a glorious winter weekend here, dining at their exceptional restaurant, playing games of pool, and reading by the freshly lit fires both inside and outside.
Come summer, this bucolic getaway, which has a rich history as being the site where the NAACP originated, is a serene getaway, replete with tennis courts, outdoor pool, fishing stream on premises, and nearby bike trail to take in the velvety green fields and mountains. Yet, we loved it in winter, especially exploring the nearby towns. We stopped at the well-known teahouse, Harney and Sons, a winter food market, wonderful Oblong Books, and a historic one-room schoolhouse in Millerton. Next stop was Salisbury and the classic White Hart Inn for a lunch of hot soups, salads, and freshly made breads. That night, we visited the village of Millbrook for an intimate dinner at Canoe Hill. Then it was back to Troutbeck for another game of pool and nightcap at the fireplace. We’ve sent a number of clients to Troutbeck over the years, so it was good to finally go in person and happily give it our stamp of approval.
The Trustees of Reservtions just announced that a limited number of tickets have been released for Winterlights. Do yourself a favor and grab them now! We went last night and were overjoyed to be out of the house in a safe environment enjoying some semblance of Holiday festivities during this dismal year. Winterlights is located at the circa-1902 Bradley Estate, just off Route 128 in Canton. The 90-acre country estate and Italianate gardens are the perfect backdrop for the more than 150,000 LED lights found on the half-mile one-way route. First stop is the snack shack to grab a hot chocolate or hot cider, and gingerbread cookies from Ginger Betty’s in Quincy, donuts from Phillipston’s Red Apple Farm, and chocolate-covered pretzels from Pinches & Pound in Whitman. Then bundle up and stroll the illuminated grounds of the estate as piped-in Holiday tunes serenade you. This is the second year the Trustees have held Winterlights at the Bradley Estate. The event runs Tuesdays through Sundays 4:30 to 8:30 pm until January 2nd. Some 200 to 240 people are allowed to enter each night, down from the usual 600 to 1,000 people. So snag one of those coveted remaining tickets and you’ll feel like you have the place to yourselves!
When a castle dating from 1050 transforms into a magical 36-room hotel in the Umbrian hillside, it gets our stamp of approval. The ancient farmhouses that dot the 3,700 acres of pastoral countryside at Reschio have already been transformed into luxurious private homes by three generations of the Bolza family. But by the end of April 2021, the property’s crown jewel, Castello di Reschio, will finally debut. Glass-enclosed lounges and hidden libraries are all part of the upscale mystique of this estate. An added plus is the onsite Equestrian Center. Interested in traveling to Italy in 2021? Let ActiveTravels design an exciting route using our fantastic contacts in the country.
On one of the most glorious stretches of beach in the Yucatan sits the relatively new Chable Maroma and its 70 standalone villas. All villas have private entrance, plunge pools, outdoor showers, within easy walking distance to the beach and restaurants. As much as we love Chable Maroma, its sister property outside Merida, Chable Yucatan, is a very special wellness retreat, featuring one of the best spas in the region. Chable is now offering a special deal when you combine the two properties. Visit for 6 nights and they’ll give you two nights free. They’ll even provide transportation with a stop at the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza.
